“Drone” is an interesting musical genre. Most people would merely dismiss it as “just noise”, but I can’t help but find such beauty and passion within its chaos and sheer power. For me, this track, “I Never Lose. Never Really”, by New Orleans duo Belong, perfectly sums up the beautiful intensity of drone music. The song boasts such fantastic and well-crafted layers and textures. Throughout, a gorgeous trance-like synthesized riff is looped, subtly yet poignantly layered over by a constant barrage of orchestrated white noise and a minimalist bass leitmotif. Take away the white noise and replace it with a dance beat and you have a minimalist techno piece. Keep the white noise and you have a grade A noise song that feels just as calming and ambient as it does chaotic and noisy. Incredible.
