GUAPO - Black Oni
I still haven’t come to terms with how good this album is. There’s something so fantastic about it, but it’s so damn hard to describe. The only word that I can think to use to describe it is, quite simply, “avant-garde”; Guapo are a prime example of experimental, yet clever and interesting, music at it’s absolute best. Subtle psychedelic and 70s progressive rock elements show prominently from time to time, as well as definite Steve Reich-esque piano segments and drone-filled interludes. I’m a huge Daniel O’Sullivan fan, absolutely loving the work that he has been part of with such acts as Mothlite, Ulver, Sunn O))) and Æthenor, and this album certainly does not disappoint. If you’re looking for something fresh and interesting or you are an avant-garde/progressive/art rock fan already, download Black Oni straight away. Guapo are on top form here, as always.
